A “singing Chinese-character culture class”: the story opens with a crisis — the character spirit “Zi” discovers that Chinese characters are disappearing. Modern schoolboy Zhang Xiaoyuan stumbles into the museum’s world of writing and teams up with Zi to travel through time, meeting a Shang-dynasty shaman, a Qin general, a Tang girl, a Tang calligrapher, a Ming scholar and a Republican-era farmer on a quest to recover the characters. Along the way children pick up how oracle-bone script was born, how Qin “unified the script,” how calligraphy developed, and how traditional and simplified characters evolved. The staging draws on oracle-bone rubbings, steles and classical calligraphy for a museum-time-travel feel; the music mixes Chinese-style children’s songs, pop and rock, with the theme song “Square Chinese Characters” and a dance, “One Horizontal, One Vertical,” that acts out strokes with the body. Interactive Q&A and call-and-response keep children thinking and reading along rather than just watching.
